Lula - Sara Blohmé
I like this sketchy imperfect style, I occasionally doodle like this, and as soon as I saw it I smiled. Sara Blohmé's art is whimsical and light, I really like the way in which she has created a scene using real objects and paper cut outs.
Fontstruct
Fontstruct is a really cool and easy way to make simple fonts. You sign up, log in and are able to create fonts easily with a selection of different tools and options, it is pixel based, you select which shape you want to use and make the letters square by square. It really is easy to grasp and doesn't take too long to create a working typeface. The good thing about the site is that you can save your progress whenever you want and even download and test your font whenever you want! I thought this site was a very fun way of idling away some time.
Powerpuff Girls
Looking back to the days of my childhood, I realize that I spent a rather LARGE portion of it watching cartoons and kids TV. There are a few shows which stand out, ones which even to this day I think about from time to time on a regular basis, one of these cartoons is definitely the Powerpuff girls. This may seem odd but it is actually a really good cartoon, one of the few which stands the test of time. It uses comedy and plays against the conventions of heroes and villains. Showing the endless battle where the villain always escapes, this may seem a dour thing which has been done before and before BUT it embraces these moments of silliness. The villains are flawed and somewhat creepy for kids TV but it is definitely something which inspired me early on.
Google Art Project
This is an amazing site! It's basically google street view but in art galleries! I was able to stroll through the Van Gogh Museum and then take a trip and glide through the MoMA in New York. This is a very amazing way to utilize this type of technology, it enables people the opportunity to view artwork that they may never get the opportunity to see in real life. I know that it does not show the scale and grandeur of some pieces but you are able to see it in its frame, totally beating looking at it in a text book. Then there is the detail in some of the images, you are able to view some images as a whole or zoom in, zoom until you are able to see every brush stroke and every splodge of paint! it is truly amazing and definitely a new and adventurous way of showing people art.
FRKNCNGZ Blog
This is a blog which I came across whilst endlessly trawling through the net. It is a blog created solely for type and how people use it to create art. It is a really good place for ideas and there are hundreds of different example of amazing things people do with type.
Pixlegarten
I came across this artwork in a magazine and didn't really take any notice of it, it was only when I flicked through again that I saw how it had been made, I looked closer and saw that they use a frame to hold up and suspend text. This is different from what I have seen before and added a sense of depth to the image. I uses real shadows rather than ones created digitally. I like the way that they use all of the space too, by using the floor they create a sense of perspective. I really like this as it is not done using a computer.
Olly Moss - Film posters
Olly Moss' Selection of film posters really caught my eye! They are witty and are able to capture a key element of the film in an image. He does this by clearly understanding the films and focusing on a iconic moment and showing it using symbolism.
For example the 'There will be blood' poster has a cross as part of the oil pumps mechanism. Religion is a strong theme which runs throughout the film, with the character battling with faith in themselves and what they do as a profession and how it affect others. This is apparent also apparent with the others, 'The deer hunter' poster shows a guns chambers by using six circles, with one of these circles containing another, showing the bullet. This is significant because the Russian roulette scenes are iconic and very bone chilling. This is just looking at two of them, the rest are equally as complex and clever with how they represent the films.
Lastly I just really love the style, I am unsure if it is actually screen printed or whether they are made digitally with textures to make them look like they have been printed. Either way they are great pieces of work, and have a great visual style.
